An e-bike changes the day — but not the terrain.
Electric assistance makes the 1,100 m of climbing on the official Croatian 80 km route more accessible and gives riders more freedom to leave the railway alignment for hill towns. It does not turn rough gravel into asphalt, and it does not replace confident braking or line choice.
Choose tyres before motor power
Prioritise a stable bike with appropriate gravel or MTB tyres. A powerful motor on narrow road tyres is the wrong compromise for loose or uneven sections. Comfort and control matter more than headline wattage.
Range
Battery consumption varies with rider weight, support mode, temperature, tyre pressure, wind and climbing. Do not plan an 80 km day around the marketing range printed on a bike. Ask the rental provider for realistic range on Istrian gravel and whether a spare battery or charger is available.
Where e-bikes add the most value
They are especially useful if you want to combine the railway with the climbs into Grožnjan, Oprtalj or Motovun, if your group has mixed fitness, or if the objective is photography, food and place rather than athletic performance.
Handling and tunnel etiquette
Use low assistance in narrow or busy spaces. Slow before tunnel entrances and keep a front light available. Heavier e-bikes need more braking distance on descending gravel.
