Choose the ride, not just the distance.
A one-way 80 km ride with 1,100 m climbing is a different day from a 30–45 km highlights section with time in Grožnjan, Livade or Motovun. Start with your desired experience.
Use the right bike.
In Croatia, a gravel bike, hardtail MTB or e-bike is the sensible default. Road bikes are the wrong tool for rougher sections. Wider tyres and lower pressures improve control and comfort.
Plan the return.
Point-to-point riding is what makes the railway line satisfying, but it requires a shuttle, a second vehicle, an arranged transfer or a carefully designed loop back to your base.
Take tunnels seriously.
Carry lights, even when tunnel lighting is reported. Temperature, visibility and surface can change quickly, and a backup front light weighs almost nothing.
Build in the hill towns.
The former railway often passes below the towns. If you want Grožnjan, Oprtalj or Motovun rather than only views of them, budget for climbs, walking time and stops.
Check current conditions.
Trail access, maintenance, weather, lighting and services change. Recheck official local information shortly before departure rather than treating any guide as live trail control.
