Parenzana in Istria

The heritage-heavy, gravel-rich heart of the route.

Croatian core

Predominantly gravel, deeply inland, rich in railway heritage.

Istria Bike’s Trail 19 is the clearest current official data set for a dedicated Croatian Parenzana ride: 80 km from Savudrija to Vižinada via Buje, Grožnjan, Livade and Motovun, with 1,100 m climbing, 78 km macadam and 2 km asphalt.

Grožnjan to Livade

The official Parenzana project describes this as the most attractive part of the route, citing six tunnels, four viaducts, bridges and viewpoints. It is the section to prioritise if heritage and scenery matter more than total distance.

Motovun to Vižinada

The route includes the lamp-lit Motovun tunnel and continues across the Mirna landscape toward Karojba, Rakotule and Vižinada, including historic viaducts such as Krvar and Sabadin.

Bike choice

Official historical guidance describes rougher surfaces in places and recommends mountain bikes rather than road or trekking bikes. Modern gravel bikes and appropriate e-bikes can also be excellent choices when equipped for the surface and rider ability.
